Railways of Winnipeg (Volume One) by Fred Headon
This work is the first in a series on Canada’s “railway city” and looks at the many lines which operated into this area from 1877. Packed with previously unpublished photographs, this is a “must” for all interested in Canada’s railways. Published August 2003.

 

Canadian Pacific in the Rockies by Donald Bain
This was our first tentative step into publishing in 1978 to fill an almost complete lack of books on the railway west of Calgary. The first volume has now sold over 17,000 copies and as the series evolved, the coverage spread both eastwards and westwards such that it deals with everything between Kenora, Ontario and Vancouver Island. There are ten volumes but Nos. 2 and 7 are out of print. We can, however, supply photocopies. Please contact us for details.

The continuation of Canadian Pacific in the Rockies to keep the volume numbers low.

Canadian Pacific in the West (Volume Two) by Donald Bain and David Maiers
Includes the great shots of Joe Boreskie taken in Manitoba and the complete story of the Lake Louise Tramway. In addition, there are two of Nick Morant's greatest shots and views of the locomotives on the 1939 Royal Trains.

Canadian National in the West by Al Love and Ray Matthews
The equivalent of Canadian Pacific in the Rockies but dealing with Canada's "other" railway west of Winnipeg and concentrating on Edmonton, Jasper, Kamloops, Vancouver, etc. Six volumes.

Canadian Pacific's Rossland Subdivision by the late Gib Kennedy
This deals with the area around Castlegar, Trail and Rossland in B.C.

Canadian Pacific in Southern British Columbia by the late Gib Kennedy
A follow-up to the previous volume covering the area from Nelson westwards to Grand Forks.

Canadian Pacific in the Okanagan and Kootenay Valleys by Jim Hope
The first volume deals with the railways and lake services between Sicamous, Penticton, Nelson and Revelstoke in steam days but unfortunately is now out of print. The second volume handles the same area in the early days of diesel-electric locomotives.

Canadian Pacific's Big Hill by Floyd Yeats
A comprehensive look at the line between Field, B.C. and Lake Louise, Alberta before and after the construction of the Spiral Tunnels. Now in its fifth printing, this was written by Floyd Yeats who was an engineman on the Canadian for many years. Floyd passed away in June 2000.

Canadian Pacific in the Selkirks by Jan Booth and Roger Steed
The line between Golden and Revelstoke from its construction in the 1880s through to the completion of the new Selkirk tunnel beneath the Rogers Pass. The second volume concentrates on operations since the new tunnel was completed.

The Pacific Great Eastern/The British Columbia Railway by Timothy Horton
A series of five works covering the history of BC's own railway from its beginnings in 1912 up to the 1990s, including Canada's only mainline electric system. The system stretches north from Vancouver, through Quesnel, Prince George, Dawson Creek, Fort St. John to Fort Nelson.
The Pacific Great Eastern Railway (Volume Three) has just been published and contains much data and photographs which have come to light as a result of the first two volumes. Timothy is now working on the third volume of The British Columbia Railway.

Northern Alberta Railways by Colin Hatcher and "Swanny" Swanson
Two volumes looking at the joint CP/CN lines extending north from Edmonton to Dawson Creek, Peace River, etc. A third work, dealing with the history of operations and with complete power, passenger equipment, freight stock, work cars and leased power was publishe in early 1998. CN has now sold the system.

Memories of Canadian Pacific Steam in B.C. (Volumes One and Two) by Jim Hope and Donald Bain
Jim Hope has spent the last 60 years taking photographs of the railways in western Canada. This work includes some of his best shots taken from 1935 to the mid-1950s between Kamloops and Field.

The Great Northern and Northern Pacific in Canada by Lawrence Stuckey and Donald Bain
These two American railroads had extensions into Canada which have been more or less ignored in the past. This work covers the GN/NP/ BN/BNSF history in Canada.

Canadian Pacific's Kettle Valley Railways by Joe Smuin
Joe Smuin's fine review of the Second Mainline in Southern B.C. A history of the railway from its ear;iest days until its final demise in 1959. A fine mix of information from one of the foremost KVR historians who has personal knowledge of the railway's operations.

The Railways of Edmonton by Alan Vanterpool
This 50 page work covers the history of the 14 railways which vied for supremacy in Alberta's capital city. Now only CP, CN and VIA remain.

The Railways of Calgary (Volumes One and Two) The Early Years of Steam and The Later Years of Steam by Donald Bain and Ray Matthews
These two volumes illustrate the development of Calgary's railways from the arrival of the first construction train in 1883 up to end of steam in the mid to late-1950s. Both works include a wealth of information as well as many historic photographs.

The Railways of Calgary (Volume Three) by Kevin Franchuk
The final work in the series deals with the introduction of the diesels and their takeover of all railway operations on both transcontinental systems. One photgraph was taken only just over two weeks before publication!
